Former Sri Lankan Navy Commander Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption over allegations linked to the recruitment of Yoshitha Rajapaksa to the Sri Lanka Navy in 2006.
Karannagoda was arrested at around 10.05am on Friday at the Bribery Commission premises after being summoned to record a statement.
He is due to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.

Ebola treatments trial begins in the DR Congo
A trial of potential treatments for the strain of virus behind the current deadly Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has begun, the World Health Organization (WHO) has announced.
The first patient has been enrolled in the DRC, WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Thursday.
More than 1,400 cases and 438 deaths have been confirmed in the DRC alone, according to the WHO.
There are currently no approved vaccines or treatments for the Bundibugyo virus strain of the disease, which is highly infectious.
The current trial is sponsored by the WHO, and is being co-ordinated by scientists at the Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale in DRC, the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Belgium, and the University of Oxford in the UK.
Speaking to reporters from the WHO headquarters in Geneva on Thursday, Tedros said: “The clinical trial of two therapeutics began, with the enrolment of the first patient.
Card payments now possible at all Colombo DS offices
The public is now able to make payments using credit and debit cards at all Divisional Secretariat Offices in the Colombo District.
The new facility was officially launched yesterday (July 02) at the Thimbirigasyaya Divisional Secretariat under the patronage of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, who ceremonially inaugurated POS machines at the Registrar’s Division and the Vehicle Revenue Licence Division.
The Prime Minister also symbolically witnessed the issuance of birth certificates and vehicle revenue licences using the new payment system.
Implemented under the guidance of the Colombo District Secretariat with the financial and technical support of the Bank of Ceylon (BOC), the project covers all 13 Divisional Secretariat Offices in the Colombo District. It enables members of the public to make secure payments using credit and debit cards for services requiring payments.

CoA dismisses Yoshitha’s petition
The Court of Appeal (CoA) today (July 03) dismissed the revision petition filed by Yoshitha Rajapaksa, son of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
In his petition, Rajapaksa had sought a ruling that the charge of “conspiracy” in the money laundering case filed against him by the Attorney General under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act cannot be legally maintained.
The petition, which challenged the specific charge, was taken up for consideration and the ruling was delivered by the Court of Appeal bench comprising Justices Amal Ranaraja and Sumudu Premachandra.
