Reaffirming its unwavering commitment to the social and educational empowerment of Sri Lanka’s plantation community, the High Commission of India organized the Ceylon Estate Workers Education Trust (CEWET) scholarship awarding ceremony at the Taj Samudra Hotel on August 10, 2026.

Police have announced that a special traffic and security plan will be implemented during the annual historic Kandy Esala Perahera.

The Kumbal Perahera is scheduled to take place from Aug. 18 – 22, while the Randoli Perahera will be held from Aug. 23 – 27, 2026.

The security and traffic plan will include security duties at roadblocks, inspections of vehicles and individuals, guidance for tourists, and designated parking facilities.

A total of 6,200 police personnel, 564 personnel from the Police Special Task Force (STF), 1,200 tri-forces personnel and 29 Civil Security Department personnel have been assigned for security duties during the Perahera.

The Police Kennels Division (K9 Unit) will also be deployed, according to police.

Police said security will be further strengthened through roadblock duties covering 14 entry points to Kandy during the Perahera.

A complaint has been lodged with the Thalangama Police alleging that a stock of textbooks and activity books issued by the Educational Publications Department, has not been properly handed over to designated distribution centers.

The complaint was made by a senior female officer of the department, who reported that 19,892 Tamil Grade One textbooks and activity books meant for the third term had not been delivered as required.

The stock is valued at Rs. 800,000.

Although permission was granted on May 04 to a contracted institution to transport the books, they were not distributed to the 12 centers in the Eastern Province as scheduled, the complaint further notes.

Further investigations are underway.

Hali Ela Police have arrested a woman and a man in connection with the abandonment of a four-year-old girl on Gammedda Road in Yatirawana Mudune, Wattegama yesterday (Aug. 13).

Acting on a tipoff, a team of officers from the Wattegama Police took the child into their care.

According to reports, the child had been brought to the area in a three-wheeler before being abandoned there.

The female suspect is reportedly the mother of the child, while the male suspect is said to be her paramour.

The suspects are expected to be handed over to the Wattegama Police Station.
