The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka commemorated America’s semiquincentennial—250 years of independence – with Chief Guest Minister of Health and Mass Media Nalinda Jayatissa and hundreds of Sri Lankan partners, government officials, business leaders, diplomats and friends of the United States at a Freedom 250 celebration honoring the enduring power of freedom through the lens of American cinema. 

The July 2 celebration highlighted the ideals that have shaped the United States for two and a half centuries—individual liberty, self-government, freedom of expression, and the belief that free people can dream, create, and shape their own future. 

The Embassy grounds were transformed into an immersive cinematic experience celebrating how American films have reflected those freedoms while inspiring audiences across generations and around the world, including in Sri Lanka.

Several spells of showers will occur in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and North-western provinces and in the Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts today (July 03), the Department of Meteorology stated.

A few showers may occur in the Anuradhapura district.

Meanwhile, strong winds of about 40-50kmph can be expected at times over the Western slopes of the central hills, Northern, North-central and North-western provinces and in the Hambantota and Trincomalee districts.

The Vehicle Importers’ Association of Sri Lanka (VIASL) has called on the Government to introduce policy reforms to improve the efficiency of the vehicle import sector and provide relief to both importers and buyers.

The association made the appeal at a media briefing held in Colombo.

VIASL Vice President Arosha Rodrigo said the current regulations governing vehicle financing and the import process had affected both market efficiency and consumers’ ability to purchase vehicles.

He noted that although a 50 per cent surcharge has been imposed on vehicle imports, consignments are still arriving in the country in line with orders placed several months ago.

He further said that the Central Bank of Sri Lanka’s restriction limiting leasing facilities to up to 40 per cent of a vehicle’s value has reduced consumers’ purchasing power.
