The gunman who allegedly attempted to shoot and kill the father of an underworld criminal known as ‘Sando’, who is hiding overseas, at the Nisala Arana Cemetery was arrested today (2).

The suspect was arrested by the Western Province South Crime Division while hiding in a house in the Mihintale area.

Investigations have revealed that an underworld criminal known as ‘Kos Malli’ had paid the suspect Rs. 280,000 to carry out the shooting.

Police said the suspect had been remanded over a shooting carried out in 2025 and was released on bail on 13 July. He had allegedly carried out this shooting on 17 July.

The suspect is due to be produced at an identification parade.

He is also reported to have left the Army Special Forces in 2015.

The Attorney General has approved the draft Bill to extend the retirement age of judges.

The Attorney General’s Department said its legal observations on the relevant draft Bill had been submitted to the Ministry of Justice.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Justice is expected to finalise the relevant draft Bill and publish it in the Gazette.

The Ministry of Justice recently submitted a proposal to the Cabinet to extend the retirement age of judges by two years, which was subsequently approved by the Cabinet.

The government said the decision was taken with the aim of expediting the hearing and conclusion of more than 1.1 million cases currently pending before courts across the country.

A total of 104 inmates from Mahara Prison have reportedly been transferred to seven other prisons following the unrest at the prison.

Commissioner of Prisons (Operations) and Media Spokesman A.C. Gajanayake said the inmates had been transferred to Dumbara, Welikada, Boossa, Kalutara, Badulla, Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa prisons.

In a statement, he said a list containing the names of the transferred inmates had been displayed near the roadblock at Mahara Prison.

Gajanayake further said visits to inmates at Mahara Prison would resume after Monday and Tuesday, due to ongoing repair work at the prison.

Inmates at Mahara Prison created an unrest yesterday afternoon (1).

Security forces were able to bring the situation completely under control by around 6.00 a.m. today (2), while inmates are reported to have caused extensive damage to prison property.

One inmate was killed and six others were injured in the unrest.

A whitish shipping container has washed ashore behind a tourist hotel in the Induruwa area.

The container, which washed ashore this morning (2), is currently suspected to be an empty container that fell from a ship into the sea off Colombo yesterday.

Kosgoda Police have already informed the relevant maritime authorities about the incident, while further investigations are under way.

The body of a man has washed ashore on the Kollupitiya beach.

Police said the deceased was a 34-year-old resident of Chilaw.

Meanwhile, another man had also washed ashore in the same area. He is a 53-year-old resident of Chilaw.

Police said the survivor was admitted to the National Hospital in Colombo.
