Cricket Transformation Committee botches club classification; Premier League tournament at risk

Although the 2026/2027 Sri Lanka Cricket Premier League A and B Division tournaments are scheduled to begin next week, several clubs are reportedly preparing to take legal action over irregularities in the classification of clubs by the Tournament Committee.

The clubs claim that the grouping of teams has been changed from time to time, resulting in unfair treatment of certain clubs.

They point out that although the tournament was initially scheduled to be held about a month ago, it was postponed due to unavoidable circumstances, and that the subsequent decision to change the tournament rules and announce the relegation of three teams is unlawful.

Cricket observers say that if the clubs take the matter to court and obtain an injunction, the 2026/2027 Premier League cricket tournament may have to be suspended.

A president of one of the clubs told us that such a development would place the Cricket Transformation Committee in a highly difficult position.

He further said that payments currently being made to Premier League clubs have also been reduced, making it difficult for the clubs to pay match fees to players.
