104 Mahara inmates transferred to seven prisons

A total of 104 inmates from Mahara Prison have reportedly been transferred to seven other prisons following the unrest at the prison.

Commissioner of Prisons (Operations) and Media Spokesman A.C. Gajanayake said the inmates had been transferred to Dumbara, Welikada, Boossa, Kalutara, Badulla, Batticaloa and Polonnaruwa prisons.

In a statement, he said a list containing the names of the transferred inmates had been displayed near the roadblock at Mahara Prison.

Gajanayake further said visits to inmates at Mahara Prison would resume after Monday and Tuesday, due to ongoing repair work at the prison.

Inmates at Mahara Prison created an unrest yesterday afternoon (1).

Security forces were able to bring the situation completely under control by around 6.00 a.m. today (2), while inmates are reported to have caused extensive damage to prison property.

One inmate was killed and six others were injured in the unrest.

The deceased was a 33-year-old resident of Hendala, Wattala.

He had been remanded on charges of stealing a motorcycle and possessing 20 grammes of ‘Ice’ (crystal methamphetamine) when he became involved in the incident.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the unrest.

Police, riot control personnel, Army and Navy personnel, as well as members of the Special Task Force (STF), were deployed to provide security to the prison and the surrounding area.

The Air Force also deployed a drone and a Bell 412 helicopter to monitor the situation inside the prison from the air.

Meanwhile, a police curfew was imposed with immediate effect last night in three Grama Niladhari Divisions surrounding Mahara Prison, within the Ragama Police area, to maintain peace in the area. The curfew has since been lifted.
