The Sri Dalada Maligawa has officially announced the schedule for the 2026 Kandy Esala Perahera, one of Sri Lanka’s most significant religious and cultural festivals.

According to the official schedule, the First Kumbal Perahera will take place on August 18, with the Grand Randoli Perahera on August 27.

The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has announced that there will be no change in local fuel prices for August 2026.

The announcement was made by CPC Chairman – D.J. Rajakaruna at a special media briefing held today (July 31).

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has sought legal redress against a caterer onboard the Kankesanthurai – Colombo train that had sold overpriced water bottles.

Legal action was instituted before the Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court against Jayabima Catering – Railway Catering Service, Colombo Fort for violating Direction No. 96 issued under the Consumer Affairs Authority Act by selling locally bottled drinking water above the Government-prescribed Maximum Retail Price (MRP) inside the canteen of a train operating from Kankesanthurai to Colombo.

During a special raid conducted by CAA officers in the Anuradhapura area on July 09, 2026, the train canteen was found selling a 1000 ml bottle of drinking water for Rs 150 despite the prescribed MRP being Rs. 120. 

When the case was taken up before the Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court, the defendent was fined Rs. 500,000.

About 49,000 migrants have crossed into Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco in the last 24 hours, officials estimate.

Videos and images showed thousands of people swimming into the city on Thursday, while local media reported crossings continuing overnight.

Officials say at least 18 people have died while trying to reach the territory in recent days.

This comes after Spain’s Supreme Court ruled this month that migrants stopped at sea while trying to reach Ceuta or Melilla, another Spanish enclave, cannot be summarily returned to Morocco.

The astonishing estimation by Spanish officials suggests the number of migrants who entered into Ceuta in the last day or so could be more than half of the population of the city – which sits at around 83,600 according to the latest local figures.

Officials say at least 7,000 of those who crossed illegally into the territory in the last 24 hours are minors.
