Colombo Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith said today (13 August) that the Government should continue to investigate the damage caused to Sri Lanka’s territorial waters by the X-Press Pearl vessel.

The Cardinal made these remarks during a discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat between the Catholic Church and the Government, co-chaired by Minister of Science and Technology Professor Krishantha Abeysena and Presidential Secretary Dr Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.

The meeting also focused on administrative issues affecting Catholic schools that were taken over by the Government, establishing a system for the recruitment of teachers for Catholic religious education, and reviewing the current progress regarding the recruitment of Catholic nuns and priests to the teaching profession.

Discussions were also held on mechanisms for obtaining support from the Ministry of Education for the activities of Government-controlled Catholic schools.

A suspect charged with sharing nude photographs and video footage of a woman via WhatsApp has been arrested in the Anamaduwa Police Division.

The arrest was made yesterday (Aug. 13) by officers from the Computer Crime Investigation Unit of Wariyapola Police, following a complaint lodged by the woman.

Police said the arrested suspect is a 34-year-old resident of Mampuriya.

Further investigations are underway.

The annual feast of the Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu in Mannar will be held tomorrow (Aug. 15), with all arrangements in place for the celebrations.

The Holy Mass of the Annual Feast of Madhu Church is held on August 15 every year, to honour the Assumption of Mary into Heaven.

The Mass is scheduled to be held tomorrow morning.

Hundreds of thousands of devotees from across the island have already gathered at the Madhu Shrine to attend the celebrations.

The feast, which is attended by people of all communities in Sri Lanka, has become a significant religious event symbolising national unity, peace and brotherhood.

Special arrangements have been made by Government officials and security personnel to ensure adequate infrastructure, health and security facilities for devotees.

Director of the Traffic Control and Road Safety Range – DIG W. P. J. Senadeera said all police stations have now been equipped with the facilities required to accept traffic fine payments through GovPay.

He said police officers assigned to traffic duties have been provided with sufficient mobile devices to facilitate GovPay payments and are required to carry them while conducting traffic operations.

Accordingly, motorists issued traffic fines should be able to pay at the location instead of having to visit a police station, Senadeera said.

He warned that directing a motorist to a police station because GovPay facilities are unavailable would constitute a serious offence by the relevant police officer.

Strict action will be taken against officers found violating the instructions, he added.

Two suspects wanted in connection with the recent murder in Wattala have been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Katunayake, police said.

On July 24, a group had reportedly stormed a birthday party held at a hotel in the Wattala area and opened fire, killing a man attending the event.

Following the murder, the suspects had reportedly fled illegally by boat to Dhanushkodi, India, where they were arrested by Indian defence authorities.

The suspects were subsequently deported from Chennai to BIA, while Indian authorities had informed Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers at the airport in advance of their arrival.

The 02 suspects, aged 30 and 31, are reportedly residents of the Wattala area.

After recording their initial statements, CID officers at BIA handed the suspects over to the Western Province North Crime Division for further investigations.
