A suspect who flew a drone in a manner that obstructed elephants moving along the elephant migration corridor across the Galagamuwa – Kasikota main road in the North Western Wildlife Region was arrested by wildlife officers.

After the suspect and the case exhibits were produced before the Mahawa Magistrate’s Court, the suspect has pleaded guilty. The case is scheduled to be taken up on a future date.

The Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) notes that it has been observed that large crowds gather to watch elephants crossing the road and to engage in such activities near the Kasikota Elephant Underpass when elephants are using the crossing. 

The public is advised to be mindful as there is a possibility of elephants ending up chasing people. The DWC further notes that wildlife officers will continue to arrest individuals who engage in unauthorised drone filming, and produce them along with the drone cameras before court. <

Three men suspected of being prominent organised crime figures who were arrested in Malaysia are due to be brought back to Sri Lanka today (Aug. 10), according to reports.

They are expected to arrive at around 4.00 pm on the SriLankan Airlines flight UL 317. 

A special police team, including Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Rohan Olugala, is expected to escort the suspects back to Sri Lanka.

One of the suspects is Thotawilage Dhanushka Kaushalya, alias “Ratmalana Saima”, who is alleged to be a close associate of organised crime figure Kanjipani Imran.

An Interpol Red Notice has also been issued in connection with him, according to reports.

The other 02 suspects have been identified as Ishan Salinda and Lasantha Kumara Silva, alias “Kaluwa”.

Further investigations and legal proceedings are expected to commence after the suspects are extradited to Sri Lanka.

Harry Potter fans succeeded in diverting a multimillion-pound power link between the UK and Ireland after they complained it would disturb a “memorial” to Dobby the House Elf.

The £430m Greenlink interconnector links the National Grid to Ireland via 125-mile cable between County Wexford and Freshwater West, a beach in Pembrokeshire where the death of fictional character Dobby was filmed in the Potter films.

Project manager Simon Ludlam told the Energy Revolution podcast the cable was originally “going to go straight through” the tribute, before fans began leaving his firm “hundreds of calls”.

“Actually we went quite close to some real Bronze Age remains, but we avoided Dobby’s grave,” he said.

A rare turtle that washed up on a Welsh beach is being flown 5,000 miles (8,047km) back home to the Gulf of Mexico.

Rhossi the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle was found close to death in December 2023, and has been nursed back to health by staff at the Anglesey Sea Zoo.

Now, conservationists have begun a carefully co-ordinated operation to fly him across the Atlantic ocean, making sure he does not dry out along the way.

“For his skin, we use KY Jelly – better known as a sex lubricant – because it’s gentle on the eyes,” said Matt Davidson, curator of Anglesey Sea Zoo.

It has taken almost two years to plan, including building a special temperature-controlled crate for him, and co-ordinating complex paperwork across two countries.

Rhossi normally lives in the sea, but has to travel out of the water – first by helicopter from Anglesey to London, then by cargo flight to Houston, Texas, USA.

An individual has been arrested in connection with the attempted murder by shooting in the Kadawatha Road area of the Dehiwala Police Division on Aug. 04, police said.

The suspect was arrested during an operation conducted by officers from the Jayawardanapura Police Special Task Force (STF) camp in the Habarakada area.

The arrested suspect is a 23-year-old resident of Homagama.

Further investigations are underway by the Dehiwala Police.

Engineers in charge of the reservoirs said that the Castlereagh and Maussakele reservoirs have reached near-spilling levels as of this morning (Aug. 10) due to heavy rainfall in their respective catchment areas.

According to them, the water level of the Castlereagh Reservoir has risen to within 1.2 feet of its spill level, following 25 mm of rainfall in its catchment area over the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the Maussakele Reservoir has risen to within 3.4 feet of its spill level after 29 mm of rainfall was recorded in its catchment area during the same period.

As water levels in both reservoirs continue to rise, power generation at the Canyon, Laxapana, New Laxapana, Polpitiya and Wimalasurendra power stations is currently being carried out at maximum capacity.

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary Attorney-at-Law Sagara Kariyawasam was arrested by the Colombo Central Crimes Investigation Bureau (CCIB) today (Aug. 10).

He had been summoned to the CCIB to provide a statement regarding a statement he had made concerning the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Accordingly, Kariyawasam was arrested when he appeared before the CCIB to provide the statement.

The Chief Editor of harideshaya.lk, Muaz Mohamed, has filed a case before the Colombo District Court (DMR 829/2026) seeking Rs. 100 million in damages from Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC, alleging that statements published by the bank on its website and social media platforms were defamatory towards the news website.

Senior Attorney-at-Law Sanjeewa Kaluarachchi is appearing for the plaintiff.

According to harideshaya.lk, the website had published a series of investigative reports concerning an alleged large-scale phishing incident involving Commercial Bank during February and March 2026.

In response, the bank reportedly issued a statement on its official Facebook page on or around April 26, 2026.
