Secretary to the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education – Nalaka Kaluwewe, has reportedly instructed provincial education authorities in writing to recover special allowances paid to officers who had not been formally appointed as permanent principals.

According to the letter, reports have been received that the special allowance payable to permanent principals had been paid to officers who were not in a Principal Service grade and who had not been formally appointed by the relevant appointing authority.

The Secretary stated that there is no provision to pay the special allowance to such officers.

The letter further states that the allowance is not payable to:

• Officers of the Teachers’ Service who are performing the duties of permanent school principals.
• Officers holding supernumerary appointments who have not been absorbed into permanent positions in the Principal Serv

Fishermen operating small boats in Negombo have reportedly caught unusually large quantities of ‘Saalaya’ fish in their nets yesterday (Aug. 10).

The large catch created a challenge for boat owners, who had struggled to find enough labourers to sort the fish from the nets.

As a result, fishermen were reportedly forced to sell the fish directly from their boats at around Rs. 450-500 per kg.

Three vehicles travelling on the Matara-Colombo lane of the Southern Expressway collided in an accident this morning (Aug. 11).

The accident occurred near the 115-kilometre post, between the Kokmaduwa and Imaduwa interchanges.

One of the vehicles overturned following the collision, while 02 people were reportedly injured in the accident.
