The Kap Planting ceremony of the historic Sri Dalada Maligawa Esala Perahera will be held at an auspicious time tomorrow (Aug. 13), Diyawadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela announced.
He made this announcement at a meeting held yesterday at the Sri Dalada Maligawa premises to discuss coordination and security arrangements for the Perahera.
The 2026 Kandy Esala Perahera is scheduled to be held in Kandy from Aug. 18 to 28.
Accordingly, at 6.17 a.m. tomorrow, a branch of the sacred ‘Panasa’ (jack) tree, prepared according to ancient traditions and positioned facing the North, will be taken to the Natha, Vishnu, Kataragama and Pattini Devalayas in Kandy for the traditional Kap Planting ceremony.
The Kap Planting ceremony, conducted according to ancient customs, marks the beginning of the religious and cultural rituals of the Kandy Esala Perahera.

A 17-year-old cricketer arrested by the Cinnamon Gardens Police over an alleged fatal assault of an employee of a sports club in Col. 07 has been ordered to remain in the care of the Department of Probation and Childcare Services until Aug. 17.
The order was issued after the suspect was produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Aug. 11).
The assault reportedly took place at the Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club on Aug. 08.
The injured employee had died on Aug. 10 while receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital.
The deceased has been identified as 62-year-old Sumith Fernando, a resident of Moratuwa, according to the police.
The suspect is a resident of Liyanagemulla, Seeduwa.
According to preliminary investigations, a group of cricketers including the suspect undergoing training at the grounds had gone to a water tap to drink water but found that no water was available.
The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court was informed that the Kotahena Police have launched investigations to identify and arrest the suspects who allegedly shot dead the uncle of overseas-based organised crime figure Kanjipani Imran.
