A number of decisions have been taken at the Cabinet meeting held yesterday (June 30 ).

The decisions taken by the Cabinet of Ministers are as follows :

Cabinet approval has been granted to revise bus fares.

Minister Nalinda Jayatissa announced the decision during today’s (July 01) Cabinet media briefing. 

Under the current bus fare policy, the National Transport Commission (NTC) is required to announce the annual bus fare revision on July 1 each year.

Well-known actor and playwright Gamini Samarakoon has passed away.

He was aged 77 at the time of his death.

Samarakoon created unforgettable memories in the hearts of fans especially through his performances of Prince Maname in ‘Maname’ and through the eternally popular song “Sobawa De Mepura – Siri Wisithuru” from the stage play “Tharawo Igilethi.” He also performed in other famous stage plays such as Nari Baena, Kadawalalu, Sakkaya Ditthi, Ambu Samiyo, Deshapaluwa, Vishesha Komisaris, Uthure Rahula, Madura Jawanika, Pokuru Wassa, and Asatha Manthare.

In addition, he also appeared in films such as Ge Kurullo, Malata Noena Bambaru, Muhudu Lihini, Alu Yata Gini, Bherunda Pakshiya, Doringe Sayanaya, Ira Sewaya, and Sudu Appachchi.

In addition, he was also a talented Kandyan dancer.

The Special Cabinet Subcommittee and the Officials’ Committee, appointed to take the necessary measures to address the potential impacts of the forthcoming El Niño climate phenomenon, held their inaugural meeting yesterday (June 30) at the Presidential Secretariat under the chairmanship of the Minister of Environment, Dr. Dammika Patabendi.

The Special Cabinet Subcommittee and the Officials’ Committee were established by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to formulate the necessary short, medium and long-term plans to ensure food security, water management and energy conservation. The Committees are also tasked with ensuring effective coordination among all government institutions, facilitating integrated operations and taking prompt action to minimise disaster risks through public awareness initiatives.

The Cabinet Subcommittee comprises the following Ministers:

K. D. Lal Kantha, Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation;

A series of special programmes are to be held as the National Zoological Gardens in Dehiwala will celebrate its 90th anniversary on July 03, 2026.

Among the highlights will be the announcement of names for two lion cubs born at the zoo. Prizes will be awarded to those whose name proposals are selected. Visitors will also be given the opportunity to see the cubs with their mother at the Lion Island.

In addition, the zoo will also unveil its Nile hippo calf to the public for the first time. A naming competition for the calf has been reserved for school children under 18, encouraging young animal enthusiasts to participate.

The Department of National Zoological Gardens has invited both local and foreign visitors to join the celebrations and experience these new encounters.

Established on July 03, 1936, the Dehiwala Zoo is spread across 23 acres and is home to a wide variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and aquatic species.

A discussion on the proposed ‘Temple City’ project, which aims to develop the area surrounding Beira Lake into an international tourism and cultural destination centred on the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Temple, was held yesterday (30) afternoon at the Presidential Secretariat under the patronage of the Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.

Chinese President Xi Jinping today (30) presented the July 1 Medal, the highest honour of the Communist Party of China (CPC), to eight outstanding Party members during a ceremony held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, ahead of the CPC’s 105th founding anniversary.

Introduced in 2021 to mark the CPC’s centenary, the July 1 Medal is awarded to exemplary Party members in recognition of their outstanding contributions. 

This year, eight model CPC members received the honour as part of the anniversary celebrations.

Addressing the gathering, Xi, who is also General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee, extended greetings to Party members across the country and congratulated the medal recipients, outstanding Party workers and primary-level Party organisations.
