Two suspects wanted in connection with the recent murder in Wattala have been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Katunayake, police said.
On July 24, a group had reportedly stormed a birthday party held at a hotel in the Wattala area and opened fire, killing a man attending the event.
Following the murder, the suspects had reportedly fled illegally by boat to Dhanushkodi, India, where they were arrested by Indian defence authorities.
The suspects were subsequently deported from Chennai to BIA, while Indian authorities had informed Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers at the airport in advance of their arrival.
The 02 suspects, aged 30 and 31, are reportedly residents of the Wattala area.
After recording their initial statements, CID officers at BIA handed the suspects over to the Western Province North Crime Division for further investigations.
A female arrested by the Welikada Police reportedly escaped from police custody yesterday (Aug. 13) after being brought before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
The suspect had been brought to Courtroom No. 06 when she reportedly fled from police custody before the court proceedings began.
When the case was taken up before Colombo Additional Magistrate Oshada Migara Maharachchi, Welikada Police informed the court that the suspect had escaped.
The Additional Magistrate ordered police to take immediate steps to arrest her.
He also ordered that the 02 other suspects arrested with her be remanded until Aug. 21.
The initial arrest had taken place after the Police had stopped and searched the 03 suspects while they were travelling in a three-wheeler and reportedly found milk powder and other essential goods in their possession.
Police suspected that the goods had been stolen from a shop.
The implementation of a Cabinet-approved tender to repair 04 MI-17 helicopters belonging to the Sri Lanka Air Force (SMH 599, SMH 596, SMH 588 and SMH 4416) is reportedly facing further delays.
The tender has reportedly been awarded to M/s Winsley Defence Group D.O.O., Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, with M/s Securatec Lanka (Pvt) Ltd serving as its local agent.
According to Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) sources, although the SLAF has around 20 Russian-made MI-17 multi-purpose helicopters, most if them have remained grounded due to a lack of proper maintenance over the past 15 years since the end of the war.
The helicopters have provided vital services for years, including military operations and civilian rescue missions during disasters such as floods.
However, only a few MI-17 helicopters are currently operational in Sri Lanka, while another 03 have reportedly been deployed to Africa for UN peacekeeping operations.

Colombo Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith said today (13 August) that the Government should continue to investigate the damage caused to Sri Lanka’s territorial waters by the X-Press Pearl vessel.
The Cardinal made these remarks during a discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat between the Catholic Church and the Government, co-chaired by Minister of Science and Technology Professor Krishantha Abeysena and Presidential Secretary Dr Nandika Sanath Kumanayake.
The meeting also focused on administrative issues affecting Catholic schools that were taken over by the Government, establishing a system for the recruitment of teachers for Catholic religious education, and reviewing the current progress regarding the recruitment of Catholic nuns and priests to the teaching profession.
Discussions were also held on mechanisms for obtaining support from the Ministry of Education for the activities of Government-controlled Catholic schools.
