Auto and cab drivers in Chennai have initiated an indefinite boycott of ride-hailing services like Ola and Uber starting today. The protest is in response to the high commission rates imposed by these companies, which range from 25% to 40%, significantly affecting the drivers’ earnings.

Drivers have been advocating for a fare revision for over 12 years, a request that remains unaddressed despite a directive from the Madras High Court. The high commission rates have left many drivers struggling to sustain their livelihoods, leading to widespread frustration within the community.

In light of these challenges, many drivers are now turning to alternative apps like Namma Yatri, which charge a fixed daily subscription fee instead of a percentage of their fares. Additionally, auto drivers not affiliated with any app-based service have introduced their own fare structure: Rs 50 as a base fare, followed by Rs 18 per km.
