New Navy Commander appointed
Vice Admiral Damien Fernando has been promoted to the rank of Vice Admiral and named the 27th Commander of the Navy by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The letter of appointment was handed over to him this afternoon (June 30) by Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake at the Presidential Secretariat.
The appointment will take effect from tomorrow (July 01), when the current Navy Commander, Admiral Kanchana Banagoda, is scheduled to retire from service.
Admiral Damien Fernando previously served as the Navy’s Chief of Staff.
Vice Admiral Damian Fernando received his education at St Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa. He joined the Sri Lanka Navy in 1991 as an Officer Cadet in the Executive Branch under the 21st intake and, having successfully completed his basic naval training at the Naval and Maritime Academy in Trincomalee, was commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant in 1993.

IMF commends Sri Lanka’s resilience
An International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation led by Ms Sonali Jain-Chandra, Deputy Director of the IMF’s Asia and Pacific Department, met President Anura Kumara Dissanayake at the Presidential Secretariat this morning (June 30), commending Sri Lanka’s resilience and the Government’s progress in implementing its economic recovery programme.
The meeting marked the conclusion of the IMF delegation’s visit to Colombo from 24 to 30 June, during which recent macroeconomic developments and the implementation of reforms under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) arrangement were reviewed.
The IMF highly praised the Government’s stewardship of the economy and noted that Sri Lanka has made greater progress than many other countries implementing IMF-supported programmes. The delegation commended the Government for maintaining macroeconomic stability despite a series of external shocks and for remaining firmly committed to its reform agenda.

Arrested Mr. Kottu owner, released on bail
Businessman Viraj Wickramanayake, who was arrested in connection with an incident of allegedly assaulting and injuring an employee, has been granted bail.
The suspect was taken into custody by the Maharagama Police and was subsequently produced before the Gangodawila Magistrate’s Court.
The magistrate ordered to release him on two personal bails of Rs. 500,000 each.
The matter in question has been referred to a mediation board.
