Paperless Customs Declaration System from Oct. 01
An awareness programme on digital signatures and the Paperless Customs Declaration System was held this afternoon (July 28) at the auditorium of the SEMA Building in Colombo.
Secretary to the President Dr Nandika Sanath Kumanayake stated that, as a key component of the Government’s economic reform and public service modernisation programme, the digitalisation of public services is being accelerated, with plans to implement the Paperless Customs Declaration Processing System from 1 October.
Speaking further, the Secretary to the President noted that such digital transformations are essential for Sri Lanka to keep pace with other countries around the world. He pointed out that the introduction of the Paperless Customs Declaration Processing System would make the customs clearance process more efficient, transparent and faster, while providing significant convenience to import and export companies.

Charith Abeysinghe re-remanded after failing to meet bail conditions
Former Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Horana organiser Charith Abeysinghe was remanded once again after failing to satisfy the bail conditions imposed by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court.
Earlier today (July 28), the court earlier granted bail to 03 suspects including Rakhitha Rajapaksha and Abeysinghe, who had been remanded over allegations of accepting a Rs. 120 million bribe from the wife of alleged underworld figure and suspected drug trafficker “Harak Kata”.
Although Rajapaksha and the third suspect were released after fulfilling the bail conditions, Abeysinghe was taken back into remand custody after he failed to meet the conditions required for his release.

Rajitha to Face Indictment This Week
Former Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senaratne will be indicted on 31 July over allegations that the award of a sand-mining project at Kirinda Fisheries Harbour to a South Korean company caused the Government a loss of more than Rs. 20 million, Assistant Director of Legal Affairs Sulochana Hettiarachchi, appearing on behalf of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), informed Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today (28).
The Commission also informed the court that it would not be filing charges today against the first suspect, Upali Liyanage, and accordingly requested that he be discharged from the case.
These submissions were made when the case was called before the court today.
