The Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara has said that the decision to extend the retirement age of judges was taken as part of measures to improve the efficiency of Sri Lanka’s judicial system and address a backlog of more than 1.1 million cases.

Joining this week’s Cabinet briefing held earlier today (July 28), he said that by extending the service period of experienced judges, the government hopes to ensure that courts benefit from their expertise while addressing delays caused by heavy caseloads.

He pointed out that Sri Lanka currently has around 20 judges per one million people, compared with 40 – 60 judges or more per one million people in many developed countries.

 The Cabinet of Ministers yesterday (July 27) approved a proposal to raise the constitutionally prescribed retirement age of judges, as part of a wider reform package aimed at making judicial proceedings more efficient and orderly.

The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) was directed by courts today (July 28) to complete its investigation into former SriLankan Airlines Chairman Nishantha Wickramasinghe, who is facing multiple corruption-related allegations, and report its findings to the court.

The case was taken up before Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today.

Accordingly, the CIABOC officials had requested additional time to conclude the investigation and submit a progress report.

The magistrate subsequently postponed the case until Dec. 08 and instructed the Commission to update the court on the progress of the investigation at the next hearing.

A tame elephant has been injured after colliding with a tipper truck in Omaragolle, Melsiripura.

Police stated that the elephant was being transported in another lorry and had been unloaded onto the road temporarily when a tipper truck travelling from Dambulla had struck the elephant.

The elephant remained on the road for a considerable period following the accident. 

Wildlife officials arrived at the scene to assess its condition and provide necessary treatment.
The driver of the tipper truck has been arrested.

Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has offered to pay as much as $5.5bn (£4.14bn) to resolve tens of thousands of lawsuits in the US alleging that its baby powder and other products containing talcum cause ovarian cancer.

The proposed landmark settlement aims to close a long-running legal battle that has weighed on the New Jersey-based healthcare giant for years.

J&J has denied that its talc-based products caused cancer and has changed the formula of its widely used baby powder.

Erik Haas, the firm’s vice president of litigation said on Monday that the allegations are “meritless” and that J&J was willing to settle in order to finally resolve the matter.

J&J said it will offer up to $3bn next year, with no additional payments due before 2028, it said.

Sarath Weerawansa, the brother of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, has been granted bail by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.

He was produced before the court this morning (July 28) in connection with an order regarding bail.
