Strict action against traffic cops saying GovPay is unavailable
Director of the Traffic Control and Road Safety Range – DIG W. P. J. Senadeera said all police stations have now been equipped with the facilities required to accept traffic fine payments through GovPay.
He said police officers assigned to traffic duties have been provided with sufficient mobile devices to facilitate GovPay payments and are required to carry them while conducting traffic operations.
Accordingly, motorists issued traffic fines should be able to pay at the location instead of having to visit a police station, Senadeera said.
He warned that directing a motorist to a police station because GovPay facilities are unavailable would constitute a serious offence by the relevant police officer.
Strict action will be taken against officers found violating the instructions, he added.
Senadeera said the Inspector General of Police (IGP) has issued the necessary instructions through an RTM, making GovPay available to the public as a right under the Government’s digitalisation policy.
He also said a demerit point system for traffic offences is expected to be introduced in the future, under which points will be deducted based on offences committed by motorists.
The public will be informed of the points applicable to different traffic offences once the system is implemented, he said.
Senadeera urged motorists to immediately report any traffic officer who harasses them or claims that GovPay facilities are unavailable.
