Controversy over fmr. selectors’ exclusion from SLC Awards

A controversy has reportedly emerged within the cricketing fraternity over the failure to invite the former chairman of the National Cricket Selection Committee – Pramodya Wickramasinghe and other former selection committee members to the 2026 Sri Lanka Cricket Awards, despite their involvement in selecting several of the players recognised at the ceremony.

The turn of events has been likened to “a cuckoo in the nest” situation. 

Criticism has also been levelled at the current selection committee, headed by Kapila Wijegunawardene, who had previously altered the squad named by the Pramodya-led committee for the West Indies tour, and for appearing to take credit for selecting and shortlisting the talented players honoured at this awards ceremony.

Former selection committee member Vinothan John, who had reportedly been proposed for an award, was also not invited to the ceremony.

Meanwhile, following Letters of Demand (LoDs) submitted by former selection committee members claiming that their removal was unlawful, the current administration is reported to have arranged to pay them 03 months’ salaries, excluding allowances.

Accordingly, each of the 03 former members was reportedly paid Rs. 2.4 million.

It has also been reported that the former selection committee members were removed over the phone, raising questions over the legality of the process.

Questions over guest list

Meanwhile, allegations have also emerged regarding the guest list for the awards ceremony, which was sponsored by Dialog Axiata PLC.

There have reportedly been claims that former cricketers were selectively invited to the ceremony.

Meanwhile, a significant portion of the invitations were reportedly reserved for senior officials and key customers of Dialog Axiata.

It has also been reported that more than 25 invitations were allocated to employees of Sri Lanka Cricket.

Meanwhile, reports indicate that the wives and family members of some players had left the awards ceremony shortly after the players received their awards.
