Teen cricketer placed in probation over assault that turned fatal

A 17-year-old cricketer arrested by the Cinnamon Gardens Police over an alleged fatal assault of an employee of a sports club in Col. 07 has been ordered to remain in the care of the Department of Probation and Childcare Services until Aug. 17.

The order was issued after the suspect was produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Aug. 11).

The assault reportedly took place at the Bloomfield Cricket and Athletic Club on Aug. 08.

The injured employee had died on Aug. 10 while receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital.

The deceased has been identified as 62-year-old Sumith Fernando, a resident of Moratuwa, according to the police.

The suspect is a resident of Liyanagemulla, Seeduwa.

According to preliminary investigations, a group of cricketers including the suspect undergoing training at the grounds had gone to a water tap to drink water but found that no water was available.

An argument reportedly broke out between the players and the club employee. Police said the employee had allegedly attempted to assault one of the players.

During the ensuing altercation, the employee allegedly attempted to strike the 17-year-old, who had then reportedly struck him.

The injured employee was admitted to the Colombo National Hospital, where he had later died.

As medical records indicated that the deceased had suffered from a heart condition, a post-mortem examination was conducted yesterday to determine whether his death was caused by the alleged assault or a prolonging medical condition.

The Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) has reportedly returned an open verdict, while tissue samples from the deceased are to be sent to the Government Analyst for further examination.
