President – BASL to meet today
The special discussion between President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) is scheduled for today (Aug. 12) at 1.00 p.m.
The meeting is being held following an invitation extended by the President to the BASL to discuss the Government’s proposal to increase the retirement age of judges.
The BASL delegation is expected to include President Rajeev Amarasuriya, Secretary Nalin de Silva, Vice President President’s Counsel Rienzie Arsekularatne, members of the Management Committee and Executive Committee, as well as several former presidents of the association.
Around 03 months ago, the BASL wrote to the President requesting a discussion on the proposed constitutional amendment to extend the retirement age of Supreme Court and Court of Appeal judges.
The association subsequently submitted another letter outlining its position on the proposed amendment.
Last week, the BASL Chairman Rajeev Amarasuriya revealed that the Chief Prelates of the three Nikayas had also written to the President with regard to the matter.
After initially stating he was unaware whether such a letter was indeed sent to the President, Cabinet Spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa yesterday (Aug. 11) clarified that the government has explained its judicial reform programme to the Chief Prelates of the three Nikayas.
Responding to questions at yesterday’s Cabinet briefing, the minister said that he and the Minister of Justice met the Chief Prelates of the Asgiriya, Malwathu and Ramanna Nikaya together, and later held discussions with the Chief Prelate of the Amarapura Nikaya.
