4 including elderly woman sentenced over gambling

Horana Chief Magistrate, Lakmini Vidanagamage, has sentenced a 77-year-old woman, her 02 granddaughters and a neighbour to 03-month suspended prison terms after they were arrested while allegedly gambling for money at a house in Uduwara, Anguruwathota.

In addition to the suspended prison sentence, the court ordered all 04 accused to complete 50 hours of community service each.

The court further directed that the community service be carried out at the Uduwara temple located in the vicinity of their resident neighbourhood.

According to police, officers raided the house while the group was allegedly engaged in a card game.

Several other individuals who were present reportedly fled the scene during the raid.

Police further informed the court that investigations revealed that one of those who fled had subsequently met with an accident and required 04 stitches to the head.
