Castlereagh, Maussakele Reservoirs reach spill level
Engineers in charge of the reservoirs said that the Castlereagh and Maussakele reservoirs have reached near-spilling levels as of this morning (Aug. 10) due to heavy rainfall in their respective catchment areas.
According to them, the water level of the Castlereagh Reservoir has risen to within 1.2 feet of its spill level, following 25 mm of rainfall in its catchment area over the past 24 hours.
Meanwhile, the Maussakele Reservoir has risen to within 3.4 feet of its spill level after 29 mm of rainfall was recorded in its catchment area during the same period.
As water levels in both reservoirs continue to rise, power generation at the Canyon, Laxapana, New Laxapana, Polpitiya and Wimalasurendra power stations is currently being carried out at maximum capacity.
With the reservoir levels continuing to increase and the sluice gates nearing the point of being opened, authorities at the respective power stations have urged residents living on both sides of the Maskeliya Oya to remain vigilant.
