Man arrested over assaulting Indian politician in Weligama

Weligama Police has arrested a fisherman who had assaulted two Indian nationals and attacked a van they had been travelling on, reports say.

Police said the suspect, a 33-year-old from Mirissa, was arrested after surrendering to police through a lawyer.

One of the assaulted Indian nationals is reported to be an Indian politician from Hyderabad, Telangana. 

According to preliminary investigations, a group including the Indian politician arrived in Sri Lanka on Aug. 03 for a holiday and had been travelling across the country in a hired van before checking into a tourist hotel in the Weligama area on Aug. 06.

On Aug. 07, while returning to their hotel, their van was stopped near the Pelana Roundabout on the Galle – Matara main road after a lorry obstructed the road.

At the time, a man who arrived on a motorcycle allegedly struck the side of the van.

The situation has escalated after the tourists had got out of the vehicle to inquire about the incident. 

According to the police,the suspect allegedly assaulted 2 including the politician, using his fists, a helmet and an iron rod.

Investigations have also revealed that another Indian national who had intervened to stop the assault was also assaulted.

Following the incident, the Indian group had lodged a complaint with the Weligama Police, prompting an investigation to identify and arrest the suspect.
