Shani Abeysekara promoted to Deputy Inspector General of Police

Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Senior Superintendent of Police Shani Abeysekara, has been promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG).

The Administrative Appeals Tribunal had recently ordered that Shani Abeysekara be promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police, and the order was communicated to the National Police Commission on 13 May.

The order recommended that the promotion be granted with effect from 25 August, and that all arrears of salary and allowances withheld from the date of his interdiction up to the present be paid to Shani Abeysekara.

Shani Abeysekara was arrested in July 2020 and was subsequently remanded for a period of 11 months. He was later released on bail by the Court of Appeal.

However, in 2024, Shani Abeysekara was reinstated in service under the provisions of Circular No. 3/2018 and was subsequently appointed Director of the Criminal Investigation Department.
