2 fined over ‘Python dance’ at beauty contest
Two persons including a young woman who sparked controversy after dancing with a Python at a recent beauty contest, have been fined.
The incident concerns a viral video showing the suspect dancing with a python at the “CJ Rajakeeya Awurudu Kumara and Kumariya 2026” pageant held at the Royal MAS Arena in Colombo 07 on March 20. The pageant was organized by well-known beautician Chandimal Jayasinghe,
Officials had previously informed courts that the reptile involved – identified as Python molurus – is a protected species, and that using it in such a manner constitutes an offence under Section 30 (1) (d) of the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance.
Investigations by wildlife authorities have conducted investigations, which revealed that the python had been rented from an individual in the Puttalam area on the morning of the event and returned after the performance, with the suspect allegedly paying Rs. 25,000.
The case was taken up yet again on July 22 where the female suspect as well as the one who had rented out the reptile were produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate Court.
Both suspects had pleaded guilty and the female was fined Rs. 50,000 while the other suspect was fined Rs. 100,000.
