President seeks update from officials on laws to curb online gambling

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake today (4) sought an update from officials, including Central Bank Governor Dr Nandalal Weerasinghe, on the measures taken to curb online gambling and the current status of the legislative process to introduce the relevant laws.

The inquiry was made during a special discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat.

The President raised the matter during a meeting on Sri Lanka’s Third Mutual Evaluation concerning compliance with international standards on Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT).

The President also reviewed the progress made in establishing the Authority for the Management of Property Derived from Crime.

He stressed the need to ensure that the Authority operates in an effective and efficient manner.

Officials informed the meeting that the process of establishing the Authority has now been completed and that recruitment of staff is currently under way.

Among those present were Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne; Central Bank Governor Dr Nandalal Weerasinghe; Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development Dr Harshana Suriyapperuma; Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Retired Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha; ministry secretaries; Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe; Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya; Chief of National Intelligence Major General Nalinda Niyangoda; and heads of relevant institutions, including the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption and the Department of Legal Draftsman.
