Five hospitalised following clash at Mahara Prison
Five people injured in a clash at Mahara Prison have been admitted to the Ragama Teaching Hospital, police said.
However, the Department of Prisons said steps have now been taken to bring the unrest at the prison under control.
The unrest broke out at Mahara Prison this afternoon (01) following a dispute between inmates and prison officers.
Additional prison officers have been called in to bring the situation under control, while the Police and the Police Special Task Force (STF) have been deployed to provide security outside the prison.
Prison sources said inmates had set fire to the office of the Chief Jailor and the disciplinary unit, and that measures were being taken to extinguish the fire.
Relatives who arrived at Mahara Prison this afternoon to visit inmates were not permitted to enter the prison.
Accordingly, relatives are currently gathered outside Mahara Prison.
However, relatives at the scene told the media that they had heard several gunshots from inside the prison.
The Department of Prisons has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incidents.
