Fishing vessel in distress off Negombo
The Sri Lanka Air Force and Navy have launched a joint operation to rescue a fishing vessel reported to be in distress in the seas off Negombo.
A Bell 412 helicopter belonging to the Sri Lanka Air Force has also been deployed for the rescue operation, according to reports.
Navy and Air Force teams are currently engaged in efforts to ensure the safety of the fishermen on board the vessel and rescue them.
Meanwhile, the Department of Meteorology has issued a special advisory on weather conditions in the sea areas around the island for the next 24 hours.
According to the advisory, showers may occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle.
Winds in the sea areas around the island will be south-westerly, with speeds ranging between 30 and 40 kilometres per hour.
The Department also warned that wind speeds could increase to between 60 and 70 kilometres per hour at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Kankesanthurai to Pottuvil via Mannar, Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.
