Selling helmets without SLS certification, illegal – CAA
The Consumer Affairs Authority has announced that it will strictly enforce the law against the manufacture, importation and sale of substandard motorcycle helmets.
In an official Facebook post, the Authority stressed that it is illegal to manufacture, import, distribute, store, display or sell motorcycle helmets that do not bear the Sri Lanka Standards (SLS) certification mark.
Under Regulation 59 of Extraordinary Gazette No. 1923/65 dated 16 July 2015, locally manufactured or imported motorcycle protective helmets offered for sale in Sri Lanka must bear the SLS Product Certification Mark relevant to SLS 517.
During 98 special raids conducted islandwide on 27 July, the Authority seized more than 431 helmets that did not carry the SLS certification mark.
In addition, the sale of 3,520 helmets manufactured during a period when the relevant SLS licences had not been renewed was prohibited at two major manufacturing facilities.
From January – June this year,
- 53 cases were filed.
- 87 helmets were taken into CAA custody
- 39 cases have been concluded while 14 cases remain before courts.
The Authority has advised consumers to check that a motorcycle helmet bears the SLS certification mark before purchasing it and to obtain a proper receipt for the purchase. It also urged members of the public to report any individuals or businesses manufacturing or selling substandard helmets by calling the Consumer Affairs Authority’s hotline 1977 during office hours.
