Media barred from publishing evidence in Negombo Prison killings case

The former Chief Jailer of Negombo Prison, Wikrama Jayantha Kumara, who was serving as the prison’s Chief Jailer at the time of the incident in which 10 prison officers and 22 inmates were killed, gave evidence before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court today (30).

According to court sources, the hearing commenced at around 1.00 p.m. before Negombo Magistrate Shilani Perera and continued until approximately 3.00 p.m.

Following the hearing, the Magistrate stated that the Chief Jailer’s testimony contained highly sensitive information relating to national security. The court ruled that the contents of the evidence must not be published by any media organisation, as disclosure could pose a serious threat to the country’s national security.

The court also ordered that the record of the evidence be kept securely.

Meanwhile, a detailed report concerning 89 prison police officers who had been deployed from Welikada Prison to Negombo Prison was also submitted to the court.

Prison officials also handed over a report on individuals receiving treatment at the National Hospital of Colombo and Negombo Hospital. The case is due to be taken up for further hearing at a later date.
