Warning issued for rough seas & strong winds

The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has announced that fishing activities in the sea areas from Kankesanthurai via Mannar to Kalpitiya and from Hambantota to Pottuvil have been suspended until further notice.

Director General of the Department – Susantha Kahawatta, said the decision was taken following a warning issued by the Department of Meteorology that the sea areas off the coasts extending from Kankesanthurai to Kalpitiya via Mannar and from Hambantota to Pottuvil will be very rough at times, with strong gusty winds of 60-70 kmph, until 9.00 a.m. tomorrow (July 31).

He also urged fishing and naval communities already at sea to return safely to shore.

Kahawatta further advised fishing communities to remain vigilant and closely monitor future weather forecasts and advisories issued by the Department of Meteorology.
