New insurance scheme for swine industry
The Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation, has taken steps to introduce a new insurance scheme aimed at reviving Sri Lanka’s swine industry, which has been severely affected by the African Swine Fever (ASF) epidemic.
The scheme was introduced following a decision by the Presidential Task Force to safeguard the livelihoods of pig farmers and minimise losses during disease outbreaks.
As part of the initiative, August 2026 has been designated as “Swine Insurance Month,” during which special programmes will be conducted to promote insurance coverage for breeding pigs.
The scheme covers breeding animals maintained at commercial swine farms registered with the Department of Animal Production and Health.
It provides compensation for deaths caused by ASF, accidents and other diseases affecting pigs.
Breeding pigs aged between 06 months and 4 ½ years are eligible for annual insurance coverage, with a maximum insured value of Rs. 200,000 per animal.
Farmers can obtain further information from district offices of the Agricultural and Agrarian Insurance Board, veterinary offices, animal development advisory officers, or by calling the 1918 hotline.
