Cost of Producing One Kilogram of Paddy Announced

Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation K. D. Lal Kantha has stated that a new cost of production report for paddy cultivation during the Yala season has been prepared.

The Minister made this announcement while addressing a special farmers’ meeting held in Anuradhapura.

The report was jointly prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture, the Department of Agrarian Development, the Department of Agriculture, the Institute of Post-Harvest Technology, and the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research and Training Institute.

According to the consolidated cost report, the cost of producing one kilogram of Red Nadu paddy is Rs. 76, while the cost of producing one kilogram of White Nadu paddy is Rs. 87.

The report further states that the cost of producing one kilogram of Samba paddy is Rs. 97, while the cost of producing one kilogram of Keeri Samba paddy is Rs. 119.

These production costs have been calculated after taking into account the Government’s fertiliser subsidy of Rs. 30,000 per hectare.

Speaking further, the Minister said that, in response to a long-standing request from farmers’ organisations, the Government has implemented a policy of fixing a fair guaranteed price by adding a 30% profit margin to the production cost of one kilogram of paddy.

He also pointed out that Sri Lanka still has to import substantial quantities of essential food items such as potatoes, big onions, wheat flour, rice and Basmati rice from overseas.
