NARA investigates jellyfish appearance at Panadura beach

The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) has launched an investigation after several swimmers were stung by Physalia (Blue Bottle Jellyfish) washed ashore along Panadura beach.

The agency has also issued safety advice to the public following reports of multiple beachgoers being stung as well.

The investigation was initiated after the Panadura Municipal Council informed NARA about an increase in the presence of jellyfish along the beach.

NARA officials visited the area yesterday (July 28) to examine the situation, identify the species and assess potential risks to the public.

A NARA official said there is a high possibility that blue bottle jellyfish have washed ashore along the entire stretch of Panadura beach.

The warning follows an incident on July 27, where several swimmers were affected by jellyfish stings while at Panadura beach. The victims were hospitalised, treated and later discharged.

Blue bottle jellyfish are known to cause painful stings, which may result in severe pain, allergic reactions and breathing difficulties in some cases.

NARA advised the public to exercise caution when entering the sea in areas where jellyfish have been reported and to follow safety instructions issued by relevant authorities.
