Death toll from quake in Japan, rises to 13
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi says the death toll from the earthquake that struck south-west Japan, has risen to 13.
The PM has added that rescuers are in a “race against time”.
Takaichi adds that they’ve deployed 4,600 personnel for the rescue efforts. Around 2,000 of them are from the police force, while about 1,000 are from the fire service.Rescue efforts are under way at a shopping mall in Kumamoto, where many people are trapped – one witness reported the second floor collapsing.
The earthquake – estimated at 6.8 magnitude by the US Geological Survey – hit inland on Kyushu island at 16:27 local time (07:27 GMT) on Tuesday.
