Chief jailor of Negombo Prison to appear before court
The Chief Jailor who was on duty at the Negombo Prison during the recent tragic unrest, has been ordered to appear before courts tomorrow (July 30) to give evidence.
Negombo Magistrate Shilani Perera made the order yesterday (July 28).
Additionally, the magistrate ordered a detailed report to be submitted to the court concerning the 89 prison police officers who arrived at the Negombo Prison from Welikada, as well as a report regarding those receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital and the Negombo Hospital.
Accordingly, when the case was taken up at 2:00pm yesterday, the Superintendent of Prisons failed to appear before court. The magistrate noted that the superintendent had been summoned to court over several days. Due to his absence again today, the magistrate ordered notices to be issued to the Prison Superintendent. At that point, the present prison officers stated that the superintendent would be arriving at court. Consequently, the issuance of notices was cancelled, and the court ordered the case to be called again at 2:30pm.
When the case was recalled at 2:30pm , Negombo Prison Superintendent Vajira Abeydeera appeared before the court.The case is to be taken up again tomorrow (July 30).
