Human-elephant conflict : China to help to construct bamboo ‘bio-fence’
China has agreed to provide the necessary technical and research support to establish a bamboo ‘bio-fence’ as a sustainable, eco-friendly solution to Sri Lanka’s long-standing human-elephant conflict.
This proposal was discussed during an official study tour undertaken by a Sri Lankan delegation led by the Hon. Deputy Minister of Environment, Anton Jayakody, to the International Center for Bamboo and Rattan (ICBR) in Beijing, China.
During a special bilateral discussion held with the Director General and senior officials of the ICBR, the delegation conducted an in-depth study on bamboo cultivation, modern processing technologies, and various industrial products derived from bamboo. Both parties also highlighted the importance of the historic, economic, and increasingly strengthened political ties between Sri Lanka and China.
The Deputy Minister of Environment officially requested support to implement proposals for creating an effective bamboo-based bio-fence to control the human-elephant conflict in Sri Lanka. Responding positively, the Chinese side expressed its readiness to provide full support for research and development (R&D), modern technologies, and best practices.
This initiative aims not only to offer a sustainable solution to the human-elephant conflict but also to uplift the economic standing of local communities through bamboo-based products.
It is anticipated that such innovative approaches – which are both environmentally friendly and economically empowering – will significantly contribute to achieving Sri Lanka’s green development targets in the future.
