BASL to hold special General Meeting today

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) is scheduled to hold a Special General Meeting in Colombo today (July 29).

BASL President, Attorney-at-Law Rajeev Amarasuriya, said the meeting will focus on the action to be taken in response to the Government’s proposal to increase the retirement age of judges.

Accordingly, the meeting is scheduled to commence at 11.00 a.m. at the BASL premises.

He further said, “This is not an issue concerning any individual or any particular judge. It is a matter of profound national importance relating to the independence of the judiciary, the fundamental principles of the Constitution, and the preservation of public confidence. Such fundamental constitutional changes should only be made following broad public and stakeholder consultation, with transparency and in accordance with due process.”

He also invited all BASL members to attend the Special General Meeting to deliberate on the matter.
