Rajitha to Face Indictment This Week

Former Fisheries Minister Rajitha Senaratne will be indicted on 31 July over allegations that the award of a sand-mining project at Kirinda Fisheries Harbour to a South Korean company caused the Government a loss of more than Rs. 20 million, Assistant Director of Legal Affairs Sulochana Hettiarachchi, appearing on behalf of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), informed Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama today (28).

The Commission also informed the court that it would not be filing charges today against the first suspect, Upali Liyanage, and accordingly requested that he be discharged from the case.

These submissions were made when the case was called before the court today.

After considering the submissions, the Chief Magistrate ordered that indictments be filed against the second suspect and that the court be informed accordingly. He also ordered that the first suspect be discharged from the proceedings.

Making further submissions, the Bribery Commission stated that investigations into both suspects had now been completed and that indictments would be filed in the High Court.

The Commission made these submissions when both suspects appeared before the court today.

The case relates to allegations that the suspects caused the Government a loss of more than Rs. 20 million by awarding a sand-mining project at Kirinda Fisheries Harbour to a South Korean company.

Both suspects had previously been remanded in custody in connection with the case and were later released on bail.

The case has been fixed to be called again on 4 December.
