Cabinet green light to lease out 5 Presidential residences
Although several President’s residences are maintained in various regions of Sri Lanka for the purpose of being utilized during the official duties and personal leisure times of the President, these residences are not used for the current President’s activities.
Possessing very high architectural and economic values, these residences are equipped with comprehensive facilities and attractive landscaped grounds. Currently administered under the Presidential Secretariat, a significant amount of public funds has to be spent for the maintenance, security provision, and other expenses of these residences.
Therefore, taking into consideration the recommendations of the committee appointed to introduce a suitable methodology for the economically productive utilization of government-owned bungalows, houses, and President’s residences, the proposal presented by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to call for proposals and lease out the President’s residences located in the areas of Bentota, Kataragama, Mahiyangana, Embilipitiya, and Anuradhapura on a long-term lease basis to suitable investors for the implementation of investment projects in the tourism sector has been approved by the Cabinet of Ministers yesterday (July 27).
