Kavadi dancing removed from Devinuwara Perahera

Police have recommended the removal of the Kavadi dance performance from the procession scheduled to be held on 28 July at the historic Sri Uthpalawanna Sri Vishnu Maha Devalaya in Devinuwara.

The recommendation, made by Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya, was conveyed today (26) by Matara District Secretary Chandana Tilakaratne to the Basnayake Nilame of the Uthpalawanna Sri Vishnu Devalaya, according to reports.

The annual procession festival of the Devinuwara Vishnu Devalaya is currently under way, with the procession featuring Kavadi dancing scheduled to take place on 28 July.

According to intelligence assessments conducted in relation to the procession by the Chief of National Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence, the State Intelligence Service and the Police Special Branch, information has been received indicating that a contentious situation could arise between the organisers and dancers.

Accordingly, the Inspector General of Police has informed the Matara District Secretary in writing that the Kavadi dance performance scheduled for that day should be removed from the procession.

Following the written notification, Matara District Secretary Chandana Tilakaratne reportedly informed the Basnayake Nilame of the Devinuwara Uthpalawanna Sri Vishnu Devalaya of the recommendation today.

Meanwhile, media reports had previously stated that Basnayake Nilame of the Devinuwara Devalaya, Thilina Madhusanka, had received death threats from overseas-based organised crime figure Kanjipani Imran.

The threats were reportedly linked to a decision by the Basnayake Nilame and the Devalaya administration to exclude 20 of the 47 groups that had applied to perform Kavadi dances at the Devinuwara Devalaya procession.
