Phase II of Anuradhapura North Water Supply Project, inaugurated (Pics)
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake marked the commencement of Phase II of the Anuradhapura North Water Supply Project today morning (July 10).The Phase II development is expected to provide clean and safe drinking water to around 67,000 families in the Padaviya, Kebithigollewa, Horowpothana and Kahatagasdigiliya Divisional Secretariat areas in the Anuradhapura District.
Addressing the gathering, President Dissanayake noted that the absence of access to safe drinking water has been identified as a major contributing factor to the spread of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) of unknown aetiology reported in these areas since the 1990s.
He stressed that ensuring access to safe water is closely linked with protecting the health, dignity and wellbeing of communities.
The President also expressed his appreciation to the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for its continued support, while commending the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Water Supply and the National Water Supply and Drainage Board for their role in implementing the project.
He called on all parties involved to remain committed to completing the project within the planned time frame, ensuring that its benefits reach the people without unnecessary delays.
The President also pointed out that despite decades of investment in water supply projects, only around 60 per cent of the country’s population, (approximately 4.2 – 4.3 million families) currently have access to safe drinking water.
He added that the Government plans to commence 22 drinking water supply projects next year with an estimated investment of Rs. 20 billion, aimed at benefiting nearly one million people.
