Anti-corruption campaigner Nihal Sri Ameresekere passes away

Mr Nihal Sri Ameresekere, one of Sri Lanka’s leading anti-corruption campaigners, a Chartered Accountant, and a public interest litigant who filed numerous cases before the courts in the public interest, has passed away.

His funeral will take place on Saturday, 4 July, at 1.30 p.m. at the General Cemetery, Borella.

His remains will lie in state for members of the public to pay their respects at The Respect (Jayaratne Funeral Parlour) in Borella, from 9.00 a.m. on Friday, 3 July, until 1.00 p.m. on Saturday, 4 July.

Born on 16 July 1947 in Kandy, Mr Ameresekere was an alumnus of S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia. He was a Chartered Accountant and an internationally recognised specialist in fraud investigation.

During the administration of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, he served as Chairman of the Public Enterprises Reform Commission (PERC).

Mr Ameresekere became widely known for bringing numerous matters relating to public financial management, the privatisation of state assets, corruption and fraud before the courts. He gained particular recognition as a public interest litigant who filed a number of cases before the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka in the interest of the public.
