Damian Fernando appointed Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy

Vice Admiral Damian Fernando has been appointed as the new Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy.

The appointment was made by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

Formerly serving as the Chief of Staff of the Sri Lanka Navy, Rear Admiral Damian Fernando has been promoted to the rank of Vice Admiral and becomes the 27th Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy.

His letter of appointment was formally presented by the Secretary to the President, Dr Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, at the Presidential Secretariat this afternoon (30).

The appointment will take effect from 1 July, when the incumbent Commander of the Navy, Admiral Kanchana Banagoda, is due to retire from service.

Vice Admiral Damian Fernando received his education at St Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa. He joined the Sri Lanka Navy in 1991 as an Executive Branch Officer Cadet under the Navy’s 21st intake.

Following the successful completion of his initial naval training at the Naval and Maritime Academy, Trincomalee, he was commissioned as a Sub Lieutenant in 1993.

During a naval career spanning nearly 35 years, Vice Admiral Fernando has completed numerous professional and specialist training programmes both in Sri Lanka and overseas. He has been awarded several military honours, including the Rana Sura Medal and the Uttama Seva Medal.

In recognition of his professional competence, efficiency and distinguished service, he has also received commendation letters from Commanders of the Sri Lanka Navy on six separate occasions.

Vice Admiral Damian Fernando holds a Master of Science in Defence Studies from the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University and a Master of Arts in International Security and Strategic Studies from King’s College London.
