Bollywood Icon Anupam Kher Challenges Elon Musk Over Social Media Account Lock

On February 24, 2025, Bollywood icon Anupam Kher took to social media to address an unexpected issue: his account on X (formerly Twitter) was temporarily locked due to a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) notice. Kher, a respected figure in the entertainment industry, has been an active user on the platform since 2007 and is known for his strict adherence to social media guidelines.

Kher’s tweet to Elon Musk, the owner of X, expressed his surprise and confusion over the account lock. He emphasized his long-standing commitment to following copyright rules and requested clarification on which specific post had violated the platform’s guidelines. His message read, “Dear X! Even though my account has been restored I was surprised to see it locked. I have been on this platform since September 2007. Have always been mindful of rules of #X (formerly Twitter). Or for that matter any social media copyright rules. So found it a little absurd. Would love to know which post of mine did violate your rules? Thanks! @elonmusk”.

Kher attached a screenshot of the notification he received, which explained that his account was locked due to a DMCA complaint. The notice stated that copyright owners can report content they believe infringes on their work, leading X to remove the identified material upon validating the complaint.

As of now, there has been no official response from Elon Musk or the X team regarding the incident. The temporary suspension of Kher’s account has sparked discussions about the enforcement of copyright policies on social media platforms and the need for transparency in handling such complaints. As conversations continue, users are keenly observing how platforms like X address these issues to ensure clarity and fairness for their users.
