CID calls for ministerial probe over faulty coronary stents

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has reportedly written to the Secretary to the Ministry of Health (MoH) to conduct a ministerial-level investigation into patient deaths and and various complications arising due to the use of faulty coronary stents and angiogram catheters in the past two years.

The CID has further urged to file a formal complaint if a criminal offense has indeed been committed.

The measure has been taken in response to a complaint made to the CID by the Chairman of the Medical and Civil Rights Doctors’ Trade Union Alliance – Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa.

Dr. Sanjeewa has urged the CID to take action  against individuals, institutions or companies that are responsible, adding that the TU alliance is prepared to provide medical evidence and facts to ensure justice is served to aggrieved parties.

Among the forefront of the entities facing allegations is India’s Meril Life Sciences, which has manufactured 03 types of Drug Eluting Coronary Stents that have been identified as defective, according to ministry sources.

At the moment, the National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) has instructed all state and private health institutions to immediately withdraw these 03 types from clinical use.

It is said that the relevant issues were identified during an investigation conducted by the NMRA Medical Device Evaluation Committee (MDEC).

Accordingly, the three types of stents registered under the numbers SR 13501504, SR 13501409, SR 13501506 and their respective batch numbers BLG 16 and BLG 11 have been withdrawn.

The local agent for importing these stents is Kish International (Pvt) Ltd, located at No. 385/6, Wattala, Negombo – Colombo Main Road.
