Doctor arrested for allegedly possessing child sexual abuse material

Foreign media report that a doctor of Sri Lankan origin who worked at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids), a world-renowned children’s hospital in Toronto, Canada, has been arrested by the Toronto Police.

The arrest was made on allegations of possessing child sexual abuse and exploitation material and accessing such material online.

The suspect has been identified as Dr Dylan Dissanayake, a 44-year-old resident of Toronto.

According to the Toronto Police Service’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit, the arrest followed an investigation that commenced in January 2026.

During the investigation, police executed searches at SickKids Hospital and the suspect’s private residence in February, seizing several electronic devices, including a computer he had used in the course of his employment.

Dr Dissanayake has been charged with possession of child sexual abuse and exploitation material and accessing such material. Canadian media report that he is scheduled to appear before an Ontario court.

Meanwhile, investigators have stated that, based on the evidence obtained to date, there is no indication that the alleged offences were connected to the doctor’s professional duties or to the care and treatment he provided to patients.

In a statement, SickKids Hospital said it was deeply shocked and saddened by the incident.

The hospital administration stated that Dr Dissanayake was suspended immediately upon becoming aware of the police investigation. It also said that it has not been informed of any risk to patients or their family members arising from the allegations.
