The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) has announced that Value Added Tax (VAT) for July 2026 must be paid on or before August 20, 2026.

The Department warned that penalties will be imposed for non-payment or late payment of VAT.It further stated that payments made by cheque, bank draft or payment order will also be considered late if they are received after the due date.

Meanwhile, VAT returns for July must be submitted online on or before August 31, 2026.

The IRD has also requested taxpayers to pay withholding tax on or before August 15, 2026.

The Sri Lanka Navy seized an Indian fishing trawler along with 09 Indian fishermen for engaging in illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters off the Urumalei Point, Talaimannar last night (Aug. 12).

The trawler had reportedly crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) into Sri Lankan waters and engaged in bottom trawling when it was seized by the Navy. The apprehended fishermen and the fishing trawler will be handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Mannar for onward legal proceedings.

The Gulf of Mannar ecosystem surrounding Mannar Island and Adam’s Bridge is recognized internationally and locally as a high-priority marine biodiversity and conservation cluster subject to specific fisheries management and environmental protection regulations.

The current outbreak of Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo is on track to surpass the deadliest outbreak of the disease ever, the director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO) has said.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told reporters that the 2026 outbreak, “at its current pace”, would “eclipse” that of the 2014-2016 occurrence, which killed at least 11,000 people.

The outbreak this year, declared on 15 May, has seen at least 4,300 cases and caused more than 2,000 deaths.

The WHO said on Wednesday it hoped to reverse the spread of the disease within three months but warned that this meant bringing transmission under control – not ending the outbreak entirely.

The epidemic was only officially declared in May, but it is believed the outbreak began at least three months before then, health officials said this week.

V, a member of pop sensation BTS, says he has been receiving treatment for hearing loss in one ear, an announcement that comes midway through the band’s highly-anticipated world tour.

In a livestream on Wednesday, the 30-year-old said that he has dealt with the problem for about two and a half years. This was the first time he was revealing it to the band’s fans, he said.

“If the hearing in my left ear is at 100, it’s only about 30 in my right,” said V, whose real name is Kim Tae-hyung.

The band is currently on its first world tour in years, marking the reunion of all seven members since they went on a hiatus for mandatory military service.

During the livestream, V said his hearing became worse when he was serving in the military.

But he said he did not take it seriously at first, believing it to be “a matter of mental strength”.
