Those deliberately setting forests on fire, to be sued
The Department of Forest Conservation (DFC) has said that legal action will be taken against those responsible for deliberately starting forest fires.
The move comes amid a rise of forest fires reported across the country.
Director General of the Department, Chandima Panakumbura has said the highest number of forest fires has been reported from the Badulla, Monaragala, and Batticaloa districts.
Noting that this year’s National Budget has increased funding allocations for forest protection and fire protection, he added that measures are being taken to establish barriers to help the spread of forest fires.
The Director General has further said steps are being taken to establish barriers to prevent fires to help contain the spread of forest fires.
He also urged the public to report anyone involved in setting forest fires by calling the hotline 1995.
